Irritated Skin
The Idea
Skincare advertising sells the after. Flawless, corrected, redness graded out of frame; the whole category is built on the promise that your skin is a problem with a solution attached.
Irritated is a brand rooted in honesty and empathy, so the campaign had to start somewhere else. Red Isn't the Problem shifts irritation from something to conceal into something to understand: redness as a marker of strength, sensitivity and renewal rather than a failure to be corrected.
The Work
As creative and art director, I built a visual world that mirrors the raw beauty of real skin.
We shot against a desert-like landscape — sun-soaked, textured, imperfect on purpose. The environment became a reflection of skin itself: layered, responsive, alive. Not a neutral backdrop, an argument.
Everything else got out of the way. Minimal styling and muted tones let each model's natural redness read as the hero of the frame. Lighting, composition and colour grading were all pushed toward warmth rather than flawlessness, so the images feel tactile and human; editorial and intimate at once.
The output is built to run across ads, social and web.
The Result
Irritated moved us onto a retainer off the back of this work, and they've since had feedback that the brand reads as more high end than it did before.
That last part is the one I care about. Premium in skincare is usually bought with flawlessness — retouched skin, cold lighting, nothing out of place. This campaign got there by arguing the opposite. Honesty didn't cost them the premium read, it's what bought it.
