The Idea

Women's golf wear is sold on softness. Pastels, lifestyle framing, clothes photographed as though the course were a backdrop rather than the point. Men's golf editorial gets the opposite treatment — heritage, seriousness, posture, the language of someone who belongs there.

The rebrand borrowed the second one. We took the visual grammar of traditional men's golf editorial; the poses, the tones, the styling; and ran it through a female lens. Not softness. Strength, and belonging.

Golf has carried a backronym for decades: Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden. It's a story the sport tells about itself rather than a real etymology, but the exclusion it describes is real enough. The film takes that line and flips it — It's a Man's World — and then puts a woman on the course who very plainly owns it.

The Work

A short film and a stills campaign, built to carry the same argument.

Most of it lives in the posing. Women in this category are usually shot mid-lifestyle — laughing, leaning, turned toward the camera, the club incidental to the frame. We directed for strength instead: harder lines, more weight in the stance, the posture of someone playing rather than someone being photographed playing. Casting followed the same logic; a model with sharp features who could hold that without it tipping into costume.

The other half of the job was commercial. Golf wear has to sell twice, as fashion and as function. A buyer needs to see how a garment sits and how it moves when a body is actually swinging; a customer needs to want it on. So the frames were built to do both at once; the clothes visibly working, and the woman wearing them looking strong while they do.

The film and the stills were made as one piece, so the campaign reads the same whether someone meets it in motion or standing still.

The Result

The images became BOV Active's primary sales assets. They run across social, web, and advertising in print and online; and the brand sells with them at trade shows.

That's the outcome worth naming. Most campaigns are spent by the end of their launch window. These images became the thing the company uses to make money in the room, in front of buyers, long after the campaign itself was over.
